Cruise West Ship The person often cited for popularizing cruises – and holidays – to Alaska is founder of this company, Chuck West, who also started Westours (now part of Holland America Line). His company, Westours, was purchased in 1971 and West started Seattle-based Cruise West two years later, offering land tours and small-ship cruises that take passengers off the beaten path along less-travelled channels and pristine fjords of British Columbia's Inside Passage and Alaska. Traditionally Cruise West has focused mainly on the west coast of North America, but their itineraries now extend to Mexico and Central America. Recently, the company has also started cruises to the Russian far east. The ships, all with outside cabins, carry 70 to 150 passengers.

Officers and service staff are American.
