This cruise line, which began operations in 1837, was originally called
the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company when running mail to Spain and
Portugal (the Peninsular). P&O remains one of Britains
favorite cruise lines, both for its affordability and its distinctly British
atmosphere. The company runs two ships in the Med the 69,000 ton
Oriana launched in 1995 and the refurbished
(1997) Arcadia, formerly the Star Princess.
Their itineraries include departures from the UK as well as line cruises
between main ports in the Med. Market is mainly British couples and families.
P&O also operates Swan Hellenic, a line which offers in-depth educational
cruises in the Med featuring guest lecturers and unique itineraries to
places of historical significance, including the smaller and less-visited
ports and islands. Swan Hellenic uses the rebuilt, 456-passenger Minerva.
Officers are British, and crew are international.
